According to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authorities, violent winds, which struck Hanoi and several northern localities on Saturday evening, left seven people injured in Tuyen Quang and five in Thai Nguyen.
Nearly 950 houses had their roofs torn off, with the heaviest damage recorded in Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen provinces.
The storms also damaged around 1,600 hectares of rice fields and other crops in Dien Bien, Thai Nguyen, Hanoi and Tuyen Quang.
Public infrastructure was also affected, with 16 schools and three cultural centres sustaining roof damage, while 25 power poles were toppled in Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang. A 50-metre embankment section collapsed in Phu Tho.
Residents shared images on social media showing hailstones as large as tennis balls in Phu Tho, along with shattered car windows, punctured solar water heaters, damaged rooftop solar panels and broken fibre-cement roofing sheets.
Authorities said damage assessments were ongoing as localities continued to compile reports.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that further rain and thunderstorms for northern Vietnam through Sunday, warning of possible hail, lightning and strong winds.
