Dengue, hand-foot-mouth disease rise in April

Cases of dengue fever, hand-foot-and-mouth disease and meningococcal meningitis rose in Vietnam in April, the Health Ministry said, warning the disease situation could worsen.

The ministry reported 6,408 dengue cases and one death nationwide in April. Since the start of the year, nearly 45,000 infections and five deaths have been recorded, up 1.8 times from the same period in 2025.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease reached 11,808 cases and three deaths in April, bringing the year-to-date total to more than 34,400 cases and eight deaths, 2.5 times higher than a year earlier.

Children aged one to five accounted for 92.7 per cent of hand-foot-and-mouth infections, with paediatric hospitals, particularly in southern Vietnam, reporting a sharp rise in admissions, including severe cases.

Laboratory testing showed circulation of Enterovirus 71 (EV71), a highly virulent strain capable of causing severe neurological complications, rapid deterioration and increased mortality risk.

Other infectious diseases also showed an upward trend, including meningococcal meningitis, which recorded five cases and two deaths in April. Cumulative cases this year rose to 26, with four deaths, 10 more infections than in the same period last year.

Viral encephalitis recorded 25 cases in April, bringing the national total to 106 cases and one death this year, slightly lower than a year earlier.

Meanwhile, influenza cases fell to nearly 17,900 in April, while suspected measles-related rash cases dropped sharply to 697, with no deaths reported.

Rabies deaths since the start of 2026 stood at 20, down four from the same period last year.

The Health Ministry said it would continue closely monitoring disease developments, particularly in communities and at border checkpoints, to ensure early detection and timely response.
