Quang Ninh fishermen seek ways to cope with fuel price volatility

Authorities in Quang Ninh Province are seeking measures to support local fishermen as volatile fuel prices continue to raise operating costs for offshore fishing fleets.

The northern coastal province currently has more than 4,100 active fishing vessels, but rising fuel prices have forced some boats to remain docked as revenues no longer cover operating expenses.

Fuel accounts for around 60 per cent of the cost of a fishing trip, with higher petrol and diesel prices significantly increasing production costs.

Quang Ninh authorities are proposing financial support measures, including fuel subsidies for fishing operations and easier access to bank credit, while also stepping up oversight of fuel and input prices to help stabilise operating costs.

According to Do Dinh Minh, head of the Quang Ninh Sub-Department of Seas, Islands, Fisheries and Surveillance, said no direct subsidies were currently available for fishermen.

Instead, authorities were encouraging vessel owners to adopt fuel-saving measures, including replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lighting, which can reduce electricity consumption by 30-40 per cent.

Fishermen are also being advised to use fish-finding technology before departure rather than relying solely on traditional visual methods, and to optimise labour use on board to improve efficiency.
