Vingroup proposes two artificial islands for Can Gio sea link

Vingroup has proposed building two artificial islands as part of the planned sea-crossing route linking Can Gio and Vung Tau, aiming to improve the project’s technical efficiency and durability.

According to the consulting unit, the two artificial islands would serve as intermediate technical points along the route, helping reduce the span length of bridges or the length of the immersed tunnel section.

They would also accommodate technical facilities such as operation stations, ventilation systems, rescue and emergency services, and maintenance infrastructure.

Beyond their engineering role, the islands are expected to reduce the impact of waves, currents and sediment flow, improving both safety and the long-term durability of the project in the complex marine conditions near the estuary.

The exact location and scale of the islands will be determined during the detailed project planning stage.

Previously, Ho Chi Minh City approved the investment policy for the Can Gio-Vung Tau sea-crossing project.

Under the proposal, the route will stretch more than 14 kilometres, starting from Bien Dong 2 Road in the Can Gio Urban Area and ending at the planned Sao Mai-Ben Dinh intersection with April 30 Road in the Tam Thang and Rach Dua area.

The project includes nearly 3 kilometres of access roads at both ends, around 8 kilometres of bridge, and a 3.1-kilometre immersed tunnel under the sea.

It is designed for six to eight traffic lanes, with total investment estimated at more than VND 92.60 trillion (approximately USD 3.56 billion).

The project is proposed under a public-private partnership model using a build-transfer contract.

The investor would be responsible for the full funding, including land clearance costs, without using the state budget. In return, the government would compensate with land of equivalent value.

Vingroup has requested to be appointed as the project’s investor and expects construction to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with completion targeted for early 2029.
