One-eyed woman caring for family receives VND 148 million support

A woman in Phu Tho Province who lost one eye and supports her vulnerable family has received VND 148 million (approximately USD 5,800) in donations from readers.

Representatives of Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper, together with authorities in Dai Dong Commune, visited and presented symbolic support of VND 148,019,172 (approximately USD 5,800) to Bui Thi Ban’s family on April 22.

The donations were contributed by readers after her story was published, with the full amount already transferred to her personal account.

Living in a deteriorating stilt house in Ho 2 Hamlet, Dai Dong Commune, Ban has struggled for years to care for her husband and daughter, both living with mental illness, as well as two young grandchildren.

Despite her own disability, she continues to shoulder the family’s burden. Now, for the first time in years, her face shows relief and hope.

“I have spent years worrying about every meal and every small expense. Receiving this support feels like a heavy burden has been lifted,” she said.

Ban plans to use part of the funds to repair her leaking home. “Whenever it rains, water pours in everywhere. I want to fix the house so we can have a stable place to live,” she said.

For the first time, she is also considering seeking medical treatment for herself. “I have endured the pain for years because I could not afford healthcare. Now I will go for a check up so I can stay healthy and continue caring for my family,” she added.

She also intends to allocate part of the money for her grandchildren’s education.

A local official said the timely support would help ease the family’s hardship and provide encouragement for Ban to rebuild her life.

Authorities said they will continue to assist the family in using the funds effectively to ensure long term improvement in living conditions.
