Nine rescued pangolins released into Hue forest

Nine endangered pangolins rescued from illegal hunting and trafficking have been returned to the wild in central Vietnam, marking another step in conservation efforts.

A representative of the rescue centre at Bach Ma National Park in Phu Loc Commune, Hue City said on April 22 that the unit had coordinated with Cuc Phuong National Park and the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Vietnam to release nine Javan pangolins into their natural habitat.

The animals had previously been confiscated from poaching and illegal trade cases across the country. Before release, they underwent quarantine, rehabilitation and close health monitoring to ensure they were fit to survive in the wild.

The Javan pangolin is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list and is classified as a rare species in Vietnam’s red book. Illegal hunting and trading of pangolins are criminal offences under Vietnamese law.

The Wildlife Conservation Centre in Vietnam has so far rescued more than 1,800 pangolins, continuing its efforts to protect and restore populations of one of the world’s most trafficked mammals.
