Fuel prices fall sharply in Vietnam from April 21

Retail fuel prices in Vietnam dropped significantly on April 21, with petrol and diesel both seeing notable cuts following a joint decision by authorities.

The ministries of industry and trade and finance reduced the price of E5 RON 92 petrol by VND 660 per litre and RON 95 by VND 720 per litre.

Following the adjustment, E5 RON 92 is priced at VND 21,930 (approximately USD 0.86) per litre, while RON 95 stands at VND 23,040 (approximately USD 0.91) per litre.

Diesel prices fell sharply by VND 3,190 to VND 27,850 (approximately USD 1.10) per litre, while mazut decreased by VND 700 to VND 19,630 (approximately USD 0.77) per kilogramme.

During this pricing cycle, authorities did not draw from the fuel price stabilisation fund but continued to allocate contributions. Specifically, contributions ranged from VND 200 to VND 400 per litre for petrol, and VND 600 per litre for diesel and mazut. This marks the fourth consecutive decrease in domestic oil prices, while petrol prices reversed course after a slight increase in the previous adjustment.

Current fuel prices in Vietnam remain at moderate levels and are lower than those in neighbouring countries with shared borders.

In a related move to ensure supply stability, on April 20 the ministry of industry and trade issued a directive to provincial authorities and the domestic market management agency to conduct a nationwide inspection of fuel distributors.

The inspections aim to strengthen oversight, secure supply and prevent shortages, while addressing speculative stockpiling, smuggling and market manipulation.

The proposed inspection list includes nearly 200 fuel distribution companies across 27 provinces and cities, with a concentration in Hanoi, with 14 firms, and Ho Chi Minh City, with 45 firms, alongside others nationwide.
