Hanoi police use drones to catch illegal parking drivers

Traffic police in Hanoi have deployed drones and AI-powered cameras to detect and penalise illegal parking along busy urban corridors.

Officers from Road Traffic Police Team No. 7 on Monday worked with local police in Thanh Xuan Ward to enforce stopping and parking rules on Nguyen Trai Street, a major road currently narrowed by ongoing construction works.

Despite no-stopping and no-parking signs, some drivers still pulled over in restricted areas, obstructing traffic. Police said patrols were combined with drones and AI cameras to detect violations and issue fines promptly, helping ease congestion.

At around 9:45 a.m., a driver from Ninh Binh Province was fined for stopping his car illegally outside No. 208 Nguyen Trai. Another motorist was penalised nearby for a similar offence. Both admitted stopping due to urgent personal matters and said they had overlooked the restrictions.

Under current regulations, illegal stopping or parking carries a fine of VND 700,000 (USD 26.61).

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Viet Anh said drone and AI camera footage would be used as evidence. Police are also stepping up outreach, urging residents and shop owners to keep pavements clear and park in designated areas.
