Storm damages 47 homes in Dong Thap

Strong winds and heavy rain have torn roofs off 47 houses in Dong Thap Province, causing damage estimated at more than VND 800 million (approximately USD 32,000).

The Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Environment said the storm struck on the afternoon of April 19, affecting homes in An Long and Tan Long communes.

At around 4.20 pm, a severe downpour with strong winds hit Nhut Hamlet in An Long Commune, damaging 25 houses, including seven that lost their roofs. Initial losses were estimated at about VND 485 million (approximately USD 19,400).

The storm also caused significant damage to a satellite campus of An Phong 1 Primary School, where five classrooms were left without roofs, ceilings collapsed and the school sign was damaged. Two televisions used for teaching were soaked, with total losses estimated at VND 150 million (approximately USD 6,000).

Fallen trees blocked several main roads, disrupting traffic, though no casualties were reported.

Later, at around 5 pm the same day, similar conditions struck Tan Long Commune, where 22 houses were damaged, including 10 completely unroofed and 12 partially affected. Losses were estimated at VND 168 million (approximately USD 6,700).

Local authorities in both communes quickly arrived at the scene to coordinate recovery efforts.

By the morning of April 20, police, militia forces and local organisations had been mobilised to help residents repair roofs and clear debris, as communities worked to recover from the storm.
