90 per cent of international flights to move to Long Thanh in 2027

Vietnam’s Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has proposed shifting most international flights from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Long Thanh International Airport under a two-phase plan.

Under the plan, all long-haul international passenger and cargo flights will shift to Long Thanh from its launch through the winter 2026 schedule (December 1, 2026-March 27, 2027), accounting for about 19 per cent of the HCM City region’s international traffic.

From summer 2027 to 2030, ACV plans to shift most remaining international flights to Long Thanh, excluding sub-1,000 km routes by Vietnamese carriers, lifting its share to over 90 per cent of international passengers as early as 2027.

After 2030, all scheduled international flights would be operated from Long Thanh. Tan Son Nhat would mainly serve domestic routes, irregular international services and charter flights.

ACV said it is accelerating operational preparations alongside construction, covering organisation, staffing, planning and trials. It has set up subsidiaries for operations, cargo and fuel services at Long Thanh International Airport, while training staff on new systems and seconding some to Tan Son Nhat International Airport for hands-on experience.

The company has signed a consultancy deal with a consortium led by Incheon International Airport Corporation to support operations planning and transfer. Two initial phases have been completed, while a third phase of trial operations is under way, with test runs set for September-November 2026.

Once the government approves the traffic allocation plan between the two airports, ACV said it will coordinate with relevant stakeholders to implement the transition.
