HCM City urges to study widening Rung Sac Road to 10 lanes

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have urged concerned agencies to study to widen Rung Sac Road to 10 lanes to meet rising traffic demand and support development in Can Gio area.

Under a directive issued on April 17, the city assigned the preparation of a pre-feasibility report for a project to upgrade the route and build a 15B connecting section under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, using a build-transfer (BT) contract.

The proposal includes two sections, a nearly 2-km link road with six lanes and the upgrade of more than 35 km of Rung Sac Road from the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway to the Can Gio coastal urban area, expanding it from six to 10 lanes.

Preliminary investment is estimated at over VND 19 trillion (USD 720 million), including land clearance and financing costs. The investor is expected to arrange funding, with implementation planned for 2026-2028 if approved.

The Can Gio Tourism Urban JSC has been tasked with preparing the proposal at its own expense, with a 12-month deadline. Authorities stressed that the assignment does not constitute investor selection, which will follow legal procedures.

Some overlapping public investment projects along the corridor have been temporarily suspended to ensure consistency.

Rung Sac Road, the only direct route linking central Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio, has seen mounting traffic pressure amid planned infrastructure, urban and port developments.

The expansion is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support economic and tourism growth in Can Gio.
