Ho Chi Minh City to launch three seaport projects worth USD 7.3 billion

Ho Chi Minh City plans to break ground on three major port projects in April, with total investment exceeding VND 187 trillion (approximately USD 7.3 billion).

According to the municipal Department of Construction, the Cai Mep Ha Port project will cover 351.2 hectares with a designed capacity of 11 million TEU per year, capable of handling vessels up to 24,000 TEU, equivalent to 250,000 tonnes.

The project carries a total investment of VND 50.20 trillion (approximately USD 2 billion) and is backed by a consortium including Geleximco, International Transport and Trading JSC (ITC) and State Capital Investment Corporation. Groundbreaking is expected before April 30.

The second project, Cai Mep Gemadept Terminal Link Port, spans 93 hectares. Its first phase has completed 800 metres of main berth and 190 metres of auxiliary berth, with 33 hectares of developed land out of 71.6 hectares, handling vessels up to 232,000 tonnes.

Phase two will add a 285-metre main berth for 250,000-tonne ships, a 359-metre upstream berth for 150,000-tonne vessels and a 390-metre barge berth for vessels of up to 5,661 tonnes.

The expansion phase requires VND 8.36 trillion (approximately USD 330 million) in investment. The project is led by Gemadept in partnership with Terminal Link, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for April 17.

The largest development is the Can Gio International Transshipment Port, covering around 571 hectares with a planned capacity of 21 million TEU annually. It is designed to accommodate container ships exceeding 250,000 tonnes, or 24,000 TEU.

The project’s main berths will stretch approximately 7.4 kilometres, with total investment estimated at VND 128.87 trillion (approximately USD 4.99 billion). Investors are expected to include Vietnam Maritime Corporation, Saigon Port JSC and Terminal Investment Limited Holding S.A.

A launch event and announcement of strategic partners are scheduled for April 30 in Ho Chi Minh City.
