Authorities in Hanoi have fined a local man for burning waste beneath Thang Long Bridge, generating thick black smoke and causing serious environmental pollution.
Residents reported dense smoke billowing from the area on the morning of April 3, reducing visibility and raising concerns over air quality.
Local authorities in Phu Thuong ward swiftly dispatched police and relevant units to the scene to extinguish the fire and remove the burnt waste, limiting environmental damage.
Police later identified the individual as a 52-year-old local resident.
Officials said the act breached environmental regulations and posed fire hazards, particularly given its proximity to a major transport structure.
The man was fined VND 3 million (about USD 120) and ordered to restore the site and clean up the affected area.
Authorities have urged residents not to burn waste and to report pollution incidents to relevant agencies for prompt action.
