Teen caring for siblings receives approximately USD 130,000 in donations

A 16-year-old girl in Lam Dong Province who has been raising her three younger siblings alone has received approximately USD 130,000 in donations after her story was published by Dantri Newspaper.

On March 27, Dantri reporters, in coordination with local authorities and a provincial charity association, met Ha Thi My Huong to discuss the financial support raised through the outlet’s charity programme to help her.

At the meeting, it was announced that readers and donors had contributed a total of VND 3.296 billion (about USD 132,000) between 5.30 am and 11.59 pm on March 26.

Dantri said it is completing procedures to transfer the funds to Huong as soon as possible.

Nguyen Mau The, Chairman of the Tan Hoi Commune People’s Committee, said local authorities had worked with relevant organisations to provide immediate assistance after the article was published, while also ensuring safety and public order as more donors came forward.

He said the significant financial support would help Huong and her siblings overcome hardship, stabilise their lives and continue their education.

Huong and her relative, Nguyen Thi My Le, expressed deep emotion upon learning of the donations.

Huong said she would use the funds responsibly to support her siblings’ education and daily needs. She also asked for the fundraising campaign to be closed, saying the amount received was sufficient.

“As the sum is already large, I would like to stop receiving further support so others in need can be helped,” she said.

Nguyen Van Luc, head of the Lam Dong Association for Supporting Poor Patients, People with Disabilities and Child Protection, described the donations as a meaningful and transformative gift.

He added that the association supports Huong’s request to end the fundraising campaign and is working with local authorities and Dantri to ensure the funds are managed and used appropriately for the children’s future.

Ha Thi My Huong lives with her siblings in a borrowed, dilapidated house in Tan Hoi Commune. Her father, Ha Van Ot, died at the age of 38 in a traffic accident three years ago while returning from construction work. Her mother, Nguyen Thi Yen Ha, 44, had relied on low-paid farm jobs to support the family, forcing Huong to leave school to help care for her younger siblings.

In late 2025, her mother suffered a psychological crisis and left home. Since then, Huong has become the sole provider, earning about VND 150,000 (USD 5.80) per day from manual work in local vegetable gardens.

Nguyen Thi My Le, a distant relative, has become the family’s main support. She has allowed the children to stay in her old house and occasionally provides rice, food and small amounts of money.

“I felt sorry for them, so I repaired the old house for the family to stay. Since the mother left, I and some neighbours have continued to visit and help the children when we can,” she said.
