Free health checks for over 300 war veterans and dioxin victims

More than 300 former youth volunteers and dioxin-affected veterans in Hanoi have received free health checks, consultations and gifts at a charity programme organised by Duc Giang General Hospital.

The initiative, held on March 25, provided medical examinations and support for 334 former youth volunteers and veterans exposed to Agent Orange in Hanoi, with participation from staff of Dantri/Dtinews.

At the event, participants underwent basic health screenings, internal medicine check-ups, ear, nose and throat examinations, dental and eye care, as well as ultrasound scans and electrocardiograms.

Doctors also offered detailed consultations following the results.

Do Minh Tri, deputy director of Duc Giang General Hospital, said the hospital had mobilised dozens of doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff to take part in various stages of the programme.

Nguyen Phu Hien, 89, who served in Quang Tri during the American War, said he has suffered long-term health effects from wartime injuries. He expressed deep emotion at being invited to the programme, noting that younger generations continue to remember people of his era.

Phung Gia Ngu, 82, who worked on road construction missions in Thanh Hoa during the war, also shared his appreciation for the care and attention provided by medical staff.

According to hospital representatives, most participants were elderly and living with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, vision impairment and long-standing ear, nose and throat issues. Many had endured health problems without specialised care due to mobility difficulties or limited resources.
