Vietnam has emerged as the fastest-growing market for Norwegian salmon in Southeast Asia, with demand expected to accelerate further in 2026, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.
At an industry event in Ho Chi Minh City on March 25, the council reported that fresh salmon exports from Norway to Vietnam rose 16 per cent in volume in the first two months of 2026 compared with a year earlier, while frozen shipments surged about 37 per cent.
The growth builds on a strong 2025, when fresh salmon exports reached around 7,900 tonnes, up 40 per cent year-on-year. Volumes have climbed steadily from 6,281 tonnes in 2023, reflecting Norway’s expanding share in Vietnam’s seafood imports.
The figures suggest Norwegian salmon is becoming a regular feature in Vietnamese diets, supported by rising incomes and growing demand for high-quality protein. With real household spending forecast to increase by 7.2 per cent in 2026, the council expects consumption to continue rising.
Ashild Nakken said the council aims to deepen partnerships with Vietnamese businesses to sustain growth, focusing on ensuring stable access to safe, high-quality seafood while supporting the broader value chain.
The NSC is also stepping up branding efforts under its “Seafood from Norway” campaign and expanding joint promotions with retailers and food service partners.
As part of this push, the council is participating in Food & Hospitality Vietnam 2026, where it is hosting a national pavilion and industry seminar to strengthen trade ties and promote sustainable growth across retail and hospitality sectors.
The activities also mark 55 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Norway, underscoring long-standing cooperation and growing opportunities in the seafood trade.
