The device was discovered on March 22 by the family of Dao Ngoc Hai in Tien Phong Ward, Bac Ninh Province, after they noticed a large object buried underground and alerted local authorities.
Local military command units quickly secured the scene, cordoning off the area and maintaining strict surveillance to ensure public safety.
A subsequent inspection identified the object as a US-made M117 bomb weighing about 350kg, measuring 1.2 metres in length and 42cm in diameter, with its fuse still intact.
The bomb was located in a densely populated residential area, heightening the risk. Authorities evacuated nearby households and established a safety perimeter around the site.
The Bac Ninh Provincial Military Command later transported the bomb to the National Shooting Range 1, where it was safely detonated at 11 pm the same day.
