Nguyen Anh Tuan, 19, and his three younger brothers, aged between six and 17, live in a modest home in Hoanh Son Ward. Within less than five years, they have lost both parents.
Their father, Nguyen Van Chuong, died in 2021 after slipping into the sea while diving for oysters near Vung Ang. His body was recovered hours later, when the youngest child was just over one year old.
After his death, their mother, Tran Thi Khang, worked manual jobs to support the family while repaying debts of more than VND 300 million (approximately USD 11,400) incurred during her husband’s medical treatment.
Earlier this year, Tuan was conscripted into military service. Two days later, his mother was killed in a collision with a tractor trailer while returning from foraging.
Local authorities provided funeral support and appealed for assistance from the community. Tuan has since been granted a temporary deferment from military service to care for his younger brothers.
“We do not know what lies ahead,” Tuan said, adding that his siblings were still too young to cope with the loss.
Nguyen Hong Cuong, chairman of Hoanh Son Ward, said authorities had mobilised support from the community and social organisations.
“The deferment allows Tuan to care for his younger brothers after losing both parents. Their situation is deeply distressing, and we hope for public support to help them overcome this loss,” he said.
