Hanoi steps up flood-control projects

Hanoi is accelerating 10 urgent flood-control projects worth about VND 5.579 trillion (around USD 212 million), aiming to boost drainage capacity citywide ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

The projects include large-scale drainage systems with kilometres of box culverts, retention lakes spanning tens of hectares and upgraded pumping stations.

In northern and northwestern urban areas, a VND 262 billion project covering Resco, Ecohome, Tay Ho Tay, the Diplomatic Corps area and Ciputra, as well as Vo Chi Cong, Long Bien, Dong Anh and Gia Lam, is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2026.

The 3.9-kilometre box culvert linking Hoang Minh Thao Street to Vo Chi Cong and draining into the To Lich River is targeted for completion by April 30, replacing outdated drainage pipes to reduce flooding.

The Thuy Phuong canal upgrade project, valued at VND 869 billion, aims to improve drainage and replenish flows to the To Lich River, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2026.

A 3.6-kilometre canal section will be rehabilitated, with downstream stretches replaced by nearly 4 kilometres of large box culverts.

Along Thang Long Boulevard, pumping stations will be upgraded and drainage systems expanded under a VND 163 billion project due for completion in the second quarter of 2026.

In Tu Liem Ward, the Phu Do retention lake project, with an investment of VND 800 billion, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The lake will cover about 31.5 hectares and include a high-capacity pumping station connected to surrounding drainage networks. More than 90% of land clearance has been completed.

The Me Tri (Dong Bong 2) retention lake project, worth VND 379 billion, will serve western Hanoi and is due for completion by end-2026, featuring a 12-hectare lake and nearly 2 km of embankments.

Yen Nghia 1 retention lake, one of the largest projects at VND 858 billion, will span about 20 hectares and is due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026, alongside a 2.5-kilometre embankment and control culverts.

Meanwhile, a VND 700 billion project will dredge and upgrade the Kim Nguu River, reconnecting it to the To Lich River system and the Yen So pumping station. More than 5 kilometres of embankments will be built, while the river will be dredged to a depth of about 3.6 metres to improve flow.

In addition, drainage infrastructure in the To Lich-Ta Nhue basin will be expanded with pumping stations, storage tanks and pipelines under a VND 590 billion project, scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026.
