Fuel prices in Vietnam keep rising amid Middle East tensions

Vietnam increased retail fuel prices from 11 pm on March 19 after two consecutive price holds, with rises ranging from VND 3,520 (USD 0.13) to VND 9,000 per litre.

The ministries of Industry and Trade and Finance raised prices of E5 RON92 petrol by VND 4,670 to VND 27,170 per litre, and RON95 by VND 5,120 to VND 30,690 per litre.

Prices of diesel rose by VND 6,400 to VND 33,420 per litre, kerosene by VND 8,990 to VND 35,920 per litre, and mazut by VND 3,520 to VND 22,180 per kilogramme.

The authorities continued to tap the stabilisation fund, with disbursements of VND 3,000 per litre for petrol, kerosene and fuel oil, and VND 4,000 per litre for diesel. This marks the sixth consecutive pricing cycle in which the fund has been used to temper domestic fuel increases.

Since the start of the year, RON95 prices have risen 10 times, fallen five times and remained unchanged twice.

As of end-September 2025, the fund stood at VND 5.617 trillion (USD 213.6 million), but could cover stabilisation for only about 15 days at current spending levels, said Tran Huu Linh, Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development.

Alongside price management, boosting fuel reserves has become urgent to better respond to global energy market volatility and ensure energy security, a domestic market official said.

Importers must hold reserves equal to at least 20 days of supply, while distributors are required to maintain five. Authorities also aim to secure crude and feedstock from overseas to support domestic refining and ensure stable supply.
