The city’s People’s Committee has approved a plan to select an architectural design for the bridge, which will span the Saigon River and connect the southern area with the Thu Thiem new urban area in the east.
The project, with a total investment of VND 5 trillion (about USD 190 million), will stretch about 2.16 kilometres, including a 1.635-kilometre main section. The bridge will have eight lanes, comprising six for motor vehicles and two mixed-use lanes.
It will run from Nguyen Van Linh Street, near Tan Thuan 2 Bridge, to Nguyen Co Thach Street in Thu Thiem. Construction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2028.
The contest aims to identify a feasible, modern and distinctive design that can become a landmark along a key transport corridor linking southern districts with Thu Thiem, which is planned as Vietnam’s future international financial centre.
The competition is open to both domestic and international design consultancies, as well as joint ventures with experience in architecture, planning and bridge engineering. It is expected to last about 85 days from March 17.
The project will require the acquisition of around 16.7 hectares of land, affecting 136 cases, including 73 that will require full clearance.
Authorities have tasked relevant agencies with accelerating preparations, including planning, site clearance and the design contest, to ensure the project stays on schedule.
