A rise in speedboat fares on the Sa Ky-Ly Son route in Quang Ngai Province is drawing concern over its impact on travel costs, local livelihoods and tourism.

High-speed boat operators have increased ticket prices, citing higher fuel costs. Fares from Sa Ky Port to Ly Son Island have risen from VND 207,000 to VND 237,000 per passenger, including VND 215,000 for transport and the remainder for port and service fees.
Discounted fares for island residents and public sector workers have also increased, from VND 183,000 to VND 205,000 per trip. The new rates apply to vessels operating on the route, including An Vinh Express, Super Bien Dong, Super 2 Bien Dong and Hoa Binh Express.
The adjustment adds VND 30,000 to one-way fares for tourists and around VND 44,000 for a return trip for residents. While some passengers said the increase was understandable following earlier fuel price rises, others questioned the timing as fuel costs have recently eased.
Residents said travel expenses already place a burden on island life, warning that sustained fare increases could affect daily activities, trade and tourism. Others noted that fares for the 25-kilometre, 45-minute route appear relatively high compared with similar domestic services.
Tour operators and visitors also warned that higher ticket prices could push up overall travel costs, potentially affecting visitor numbers and spending on related services.
Local authorities said the increase could weigh on tourism, a key economic sector for Ly Son, and that relevant agencies would be asked to review fare levels.
According to the Quang Ngai Department of Construction, operators have been requested to reassess pricing based on current fuel costs, although fare-setting ultimately remains the responsibility of businesses.
One ferry operator said it would cut ticket prices by VND 10,000 from March 18 as fuel prices decline, adding that fares are adjusted in line with input costs, particularly fuel.
