Vietnam's authorities detain a foreign man for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 750 grams of gold into the country through Mong Cai International Border Gate in Quang Ninh on March 15.

The incident occurred at Mong Cai International Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province at around 1:30 pm on March 15, when border officials noticed a man behaving suspiciously while completing entry procedures.

Upon inspection, officers discovered two round yellow metal pieces hidden on the man. Each disc measured about 55 mm in diameter and weighed 377 grams. One was worn around his neck while the other was concealed in his trouser pocket, with a total weight of 754 grams.

According to initial statements, the man did not declare the items to Vietnam Customs when entering the country.

He told investigators that the metal pieces were gold and that he had been hired by an unidentified man, about 40 years old and wearing a face mask, to transport them from Dongxing across the border into the Mong Cai area.

The man said he was promised a payment of 800 yuan for carrying the gold and agreed to hide it on his body in an attempt to evade inspection.

Authorities have seized the gold and detained the suspect for further investigation in accordance with Vietnamese law.
