Authorities from Quang Nam-Danang Railway Joint Stock Company confirmed on March 14 that the incident occurred on the North-South railway section running through Danang City.
Initial information showed that freight train AH1, locomotive D18E 604, derailed with three axles of the engine leaving the track.

Investigators observed that the rail on the right side in the direction of travel had bent and broken, leaving the train stuck and unable to continue its journey.
According to the Railway Safety Management Division II, the preliminary cause may have been rocks falling onto the track along the Hai Van Pass, damaging the rail.
Because rail traffic through the pass has been interrupted, passenger trains on the North-South line are temporarily transferring passengers by road between Danang Station and Lang Co Station.
A representative from the passenger service team at Danang Station said at least four trains would need to transfer passengers, each carrying around 100-150 people.

A similar incident occurred in late 2024 when another freight train derailed while passing through Hai Van Pass, causing several containers to fall from the train and disrupting rail traffic for nearly a day.
The railway section across Hai Van Pass, stretching about 19.8 km between Danang and Hue City, was originally built during the French colonial period and has largely not been upgraded since.
