German bride falls in love with Vietnamese cuisine

A German woman has discovered a deep affection for Vietnamese food and culture after marrying her Vietnamese partner and celebrating their wedding in northern Vietnam.

Nguyen Xuan Truong, 29, and his wife Jennifer Gleiser, 25, chose Ninh Binh Province as their honeymoon destination after holding a family wedding in Hung Yen Province.

Truong said his wife was surprised and impressed by Vietnam’s landscapes, cuisine and the hospitality of local people.

“Our love story is also closely tied to Vietnamese food and culture,” he said.

The couple first met in 2017 through social media while Truong was living and working in Germany. After about a week of chatting online, they arranged their first meeting in person.

Truong said he was immediately struck by Jennifer’s doll-like appearance, while she described him as an energetic and cheerful Asian man.

Their relationship grew closer after that first meeting. During their early days together, Jennifer often helped Truong improve his language skills and better understand German culture.

“She explained many things about life in Germany and helped me communicate more confidently while living abroad,” he said.

One of Truong’s most memorable moments came early in their relationship, when he invited Jennifer to his home after a walk and cooked a simple Vietnamese meal for her.

He prepared two well-known dishes, pho and banh mi. Jennifer was surprised by the flavours and especially impressed with banh mi.

“She kept saying she didn’t understand why Vietnamese food, especially banh mi, tasted so good,” Truong recalled.

From then on, he often cooked Vietnamese dishes for her. Those meals gradually became a special part of their relationship as Jennifer developed a strong interest in Vietnamese cuisine and Asian culture.

Over time, their daily conversations and shared experiences deepened their bond, and after about six months they began dating.

When the couple told their families about the relationship, both sides were initially surprised but supportive.

Truong said he was deeply touched when Jennifer began learning Vietnamese so she could communicate with his parents and older brother.

“She said she wanted to speak Vietnamese to talk with my family. I really appreciated her effort to understand our culture,” he said. The couple now have a young daughter.

Their wedding was held on February 26 in Truong’s hometown in Hung Yen, attended by relatives, neighbours and nearly 1,000 guests.

Truong currently works as a nurse in Germany, while Jennifer works in the hospitality sector. Their trip to Vietnam was not only for the wedding but also an opportunity for Jennifer to learn more about her husband’s homeland.

After their honeymoon in Ninh Binh, the couple plan to return to Germany to continue their work and family life.
