HCM City seeks investors for Can Gio International Transshipment Port

Ho Chi Minh City has invited strategic investors for the proposed Can Gio International Transshipment Port, a VND 128 trillion (USD 4.87 billion) project.

The municipal People’s Committee said it would accept proposals under a strategic investor mechanism and has published project details for interested firms to review and submit applications.

If only one investor meets the eligibility requirements, the city will consider granting approval. If two or more qualified investors apply, authorities will establish evaluation criteria and form a review panel to ensure transparency.

Applications will be accepted from the date of publication on the city’s official portal. Investors may submit dossiers at the city’s Public Administrative Service Centre or via the national public service portal.

The project received in-principle approval from the prime minister in January 2025. It will be located on Phu Loi Islet at the mouth of the Cai Mep River in the former Can Gio District and developed in seven phases.

Under the master plan, the main berth will stretch nearly 7 kilometres and be capable of handling container vessels of up to 24,000 TEU. Shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company has previously expressed interest in investing in the project.

Once fully operational by 2045, the port is expected to generate annual revenues of VND 34-40 trillion from cargo handling, storage, corporate tax and maritime fees.

The project is projected to create 6,000-8,000 direct jobs at the port and tens of thousands more in related logistics and support services.

Can Gio is also earmarked for major infrastructure projects, including a 2,870-hectare coastal urban area, the Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line, Can Gio Bridge and new transport links connecting the area with the Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressway and Vung Tau.
