17 hospitalised after suspected banh mi poisoning in HCM City

Seventeen people have sought medical treatment in Ho Chi Minh City after allegedly suffering food poisoning from banh mi sold in Hanh Thong Ward.

The municipal health department said on the morning of March 1 that, as of 10 am, 17 suspected cases had been recorded at hospitals across the city.

Of these, 12 patients were treated at Military Hospital 175, four at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, and one at Thu Duc Regional General Hospital.

Most patients showed gastrointestinal symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain and fever after eating at A.C Banh mi shop on Phan Van Tri Street in Hanh Thong Ward.

At least six patients were admitted for inpatient care, while those with milder symptoms were prescribed medication and allowed to recover at home under monitoring.

Following the incident report, the Ho Chi Minh City Health Department instructed hospitals to review patient admission and treatment procedures, ensuring proper triage and management in line with the city’s food poisoning treatment protocol.

In November 2025, the city recorded a major food poisoning outbreak linked to Co Bich street-side banh mi outlets in Hanh Thong and Binh Loi Trung wards, which left more than 300 people hospitalised.

Subsequent testing by authorities found the cause to be Salmonella-contaminated bread.
