More than 70 officials recently took part in tending a coffee nursery in Muong Cha Commune to ensure progress on a plan to develop 500 hectares of coffee by 2026.
All seedlings raised will be distributed to more than 450 households for planting on registered land areas.
In Muong Luan Commune, a nursery covering more than one hectare is growing about 1.2 million seedlings, which have shown strong development after more than a month.
Under the plan, the entire stock will be ready for transplantation by June 2026, covering around 500 hectares.
Local leaders in Muong Mun Commune said coffee offers stable and long-term income for residents, particularly given favourable climatic conditions for cultivation and care.
At another nursery in Muong Mun, covering 1,600 square metres, seedlings that have been tended for more than three months are also growing well. They are scheduled for planting across roughly 800 hectares in May and June 2026.
Lo Van Cuong, standing vice-chair of Dien Bien Province People’s Committee, inspected nursery operations in Muong Mun and praised local authorities for proactively preparing seed supplies.
He urged communes to strengthen pest control measures to ensure high-quality seedlings before large-scale planting.
Under Dien Bien’s agricultural development strategy to 2030, coffee has been identified as a spearhead crop. Communes including Muong Ang, Quai To, Muong Mun, Pu Nhung, Chieng Sinh and Xa Dung are each expected to develop more than 1,000 hectares of coffee.
Cuong said the province aims to expand its total coffee area to about 20,000 hectares by 2030.
“However, given current productivity and economic returns, I believe the area could reach around 25,000 hectares by 2030,” he said.
Dien Bien currently has about 8,000 hectares of coffee, concentrated mainly in Muong Ang, Bung Lao, Tuan Giao and Quai To communes.
