Hanoi motorbike taxi driver returns overcharged fare

A motorbike taxi driver in Hanoi has returned most of the money he overcharged a female American tourist after being summoned by local police.

A representative of Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee said on February 25 that authorities had identified the 62-year-old driver, who lives in Nghia Do Ward, and questioned him over the incident.

At the police station, the driver admitted picking up the tourist near Hoan Kiem Lake, taking her on an unauthorised detour from the agreed route and charging VND 1 million (about USD 39) for the trip.

Following discussions with authorities, he returned VND 800,000 (about USD 33) to the tourist and issued an apology. The tourist accepted the refund and asked officials to educate and remind the driver to prevent similar incidents.

The case came to light on February 24, when the tourist reported that a motorbike taxi driver had taken her along a circuitous route through several streets before demanding an excessive fare.

After receiving the complaint, the Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee directed ward police to coordinate with relevant units to investigate the matter.
