Police question driver over USD 39 fare for US tourist

Hanoi City police summoned a motorbike taxi driver for allegedly overcharging an American tourist VND 1 million (USD 39.22) for a 7km journey.

A representative of Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee said on February 25 that the ward police had called in the driver for questioning over the alleged overcharging.

According to reports, on the afternoon of February 24, a female US tourist took a motorbike taxi from the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on Nguyen Van Huyen Street in Nghia Do Ward to Trang Tien Street in Hoan Kiem Ward.

The driver allegedly offered the ride and transported her roughly 7 kilometres. During the trip, he also took her to the Kham Thien train street area in Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam Ward for photographs before continuing to the final destination.

Upon arrival on Trang Tien Street, the tourist said she was asked to pay VND 1 million (USD 39.22)  for the journey.

Details of the incident quickly spread on social media.

“The ward police have invited the motorbike taxi driver to the station, recorded his statement and are conducting further investigations,” the Hoan Kiem Ward official said.

The incident is currently under further investigation.
