Dang Thi Be Chinh, 56, of Vinh Binh Commune, has spent recent months shuttling between hospitals as her husband Phan Dong, 63, battles diabetes, kidney failure and end-stage heart disease. He has been bedridden and requires frequent treatment at Tien Giang General Hospital.
Their only daughter, Phan Thi Hong Dao, 31, suffers from thalassaemia and needs lifelong blood transfusions, with monthly treatment at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. She underwent spleen removal surgery at the age of 11.
The family of three live in a dilapidated 10-square-metre house left by Chinh’s late mother. With both her husband and daughter unable to work, Chinh has given up casual labour to care for them.
To cover medical expenses, she borrowed about VND 70 million (about USD 2,900) but has been unable to repay the debt. Monthly social assistance of just over VND 1 million is far from sufficient to meet treatment costs and daily living expenses.
“At times in hospital, we rely on charity meals because we cannot afford to buy food,” Chinh said, holding back tears. “I only hope for enough money to keep my husband and daughter alive.”
Local authorities confirmed the family is classified as poor and have called for community support to help them cope with escalating medical bills.
