HCM City police launch alcohol checks on Lunar New Year

Traffic police launched citywide alcohol checks from 10 am on the first day of the Lunar New Year to bolster road safety during the holiday.

A representative of the city’s Traffic Police Division (PC08) said the move follows a nationwide plan issued by the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, aimed at maintaining order during a period marked by heavy travel and social gatherings.

Officers have been deployed on major central roads, at city gateways and near entertainment and dining hotspots to test drivers for alcohol. Checks are being conducted in accordance with regulations, with body cameras used to ensure transparency.

In addition to alcohol testing, police are targeting other violations such as speeding, improper lane use, overloading and failure to wear helmets, in a bid to prevent traffic accidents over the holiday.

Authorities said minor, unintentional breaches that pose no safety risk may be met with warnings to facilitate smooth holiday travel.

Police urged residents not to drive after consuming alcohol and to use public transport or arrange for someone else to drive in order to protect themselves and others.
