International arrivals surge in Phu Quoc as Tet tourism booms

Phu Quoc Island in southern An Giang is running at full tilt ahead of the Lunar New Year, with foreign arrivals surging and resorts across key areas nearly sold out.

Phu Quoc International Airport handled nearly 790,000 passengers in January, up 34 per cent year-on-year, with international arrivals climbing 27 per cent to over 214,000.

Nguyen Ba Quan, director of Sun Airport Corporation, said Tet flight volumes are expected to rise about 50 per cent from 2025 levels. The airport handles 75 flights daily, increasing to 80-84 on peak days, with passenger numbers projected to top 720,000.

The operator has streamlined procedures and added staff and equipment at check-in, security and baggage areas to ease congestion. Upgrades include high-capacity Wi-Fi, signal boosters and extra information screens, while automated toll collection is being rolled out to improve traffic flow.

Sea routes to the island are also seeing record demand. From Feb 13, high-speed ferry operators added six daily services to ease pressure on air travel and provide more options for domestic visitors.

Accommodation across most segments is nearly full, with visitors from South Korea, China, Poland and the United States arriving in large numbers since the New Year. Four- and five-star resorts and beach tours are largely sold out.

In Duong Dong Town and southern resort areas such as Bai Kem and Sunset Town, occupancy rates are expected to reach 100 per cent throughout the holiday.

Authorities have advised passengers to arrive at the airport early, prepare identification documents in advance and monitor airline updates. Drivers are encouraged to register for electronic toll payment to avoid congestion during peak days.

Phu Quoc is expanding its international airport under a 1,050-hectare project to lift capacity to 20 million passengers a year. Plans include a new T2 Terminal, a second 3,300-metre runway, extending the existing runway to 3,500 metres and more than 120 aircraft stands. Phase one is due in 2027, allowing the airport to handle wide-body aircraft.
