The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said a cold front affected the north-east on February 7, bringing scattered rain and a temperature drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius.
The front is expected to intensify on February 8, extending across the wider north-east before spreading to the north-west, the north-central region and the central coast.
On land, north-easterly winds are forecast at level 3, strengthening to level 3-4 in coastal areas.
From February 8 through early February 9, northern Vietnam and the north-central region are expected to experience rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms. Conditions will be intensely cold, with severe cold in mountainous areas.
Minimum temperatures in northern Vietnam are forecast at 10-13 degrees Celsius, falling to 7-10 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas. Some high mountain locations could drop below 3 degrees Celsius. The north-central region is expected to see lows of 12-15 degrees Celsius.
In Hanoi, rain and showers are forecast on February 8, with minimum temperatures of 10-12 degrees Celsius from February 8 to February 9.

The cold front is also expected to bring dangerous sea conditions. In the northern East Sea, including the Hoang Sa archipelago, north-easterly winds are forecast at level 7, occasionally reaching level 8, with gusts of level 9-10. Waves are expected to reach 4-6 metres.
In the Gulf of Tonkin, winds are forecast to strengthen to level 6-7, with gusts of level 8-9, and waves of 2-4 metres.
From early February 8, sea areas from southern Quang Tri to Dak Lak are expected to see north-easterly winds at level 6, with gusts of 7-8, and waves of 3-5 metres.
