Suspected artillery shell found during shrimp pond renovation in Ca Mau

A suspected artillery shell was discovered by a household in Ca Mau Province while they were renovating a shrimp pond, prompting authorities to cordon off the area.

According to the Vinh Hau Commune People’s Committee, at about 8 am on February 1, the family of Tran Van Thang, in Thong Nhat Hamlet, was using a bulldozer to upgrade a shrimp pond when they uncovered a metal object believed to be an artillery shell and reported it to local authorities.

After receiving the report, functional forces arrived at the scene to establish a safety perimeter, set up warning tape and prevent residents from approaching the area where the object was found.

Initial checks identified the object as a suspected 105mm artillery shell, about 50cm long and 105mm in diameter, weighing an estimated 25kg. The shell was heavily corroded and believed to still pose an explosion risk.

After implementing safety measures at the site, local military units reported the incident to higher authorities for handling in accordance with regulations.

Previously, residents in Vinh Trach Ward, Ca Mau, also discovered a 105mm artillery shell while renovating a shrimp pond and promptly notified authorities for safe removal and disposal.
