The provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said a review of the craft’s history, production techniques and cultural value, alongside existing heritage inventory materials, showed it met all criteria for a scientific dossier.

The department has urged the Lam Dong People’s Committee to appoint a lead agency to coordinate with relevant bodies to complete the dossier for submission in 2026.

Phan Thiet fish sauce has a history of more than 300 years. The area is home to more than 200 producers, which together make tens of millions of litres each year.

While production follows traditional methods, each producer retains proprietary techniques and branding. The Phan Thiet Fish Sauce Association has 48 members, including joint stock firms, limited liability companies, private enterprises and household producers.

Fish sauce not only embodies a distinctive culinary heritage but also provides jobs and contributes significantly to the local economy. Many Phan Thiet products are now exported to multiple countries, becoming a symbol of Vietnamese cuisine.
