HCM City intensify food safety inspections ahead of Tet

Ho Chi Minh City will step up food safety inspections ahead of the Lunar New Year, or Tet, and the Spring Festival season.

The municipal Food Safety Department said inspections will cover 1,320 facilities from now until March 31.

Priority items include meat and meat products, beer, alcohol and other beverages, confectionery, fruit and vegetables, food additives and catering services. Inspectors will take samples for testing where violations are suspected, based on on-site risk assessments.

Violations will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law, with cases beyond the department’s authority referred to relevant agencies.

The inspections will target companies, household and individual food businesses, wholesale markets, supermarkets and shopping centres.

Alongside inspections, the department is coordinating with city police on January 29-30 to provide training on food labelling and advertising regulations, as well as skills to identify and prevent online fraud.

The crackdown follows recent nationwide busts of large-scale food safety violations, including chemical-treated noodles, chemically soaked snails and the seizure of more than 18 tonnes of untraceable beef in the city.

Authorities warned that food safety risks remain complex, particularly as e-commerce expands rapidly, posing growing challenges for regulation and enforcement.
