Danang declares disaster emergency in mountainous areas

Danang authorities have declared a disaster emergency in several mountainous residential areas after large ground cracks appeared following heavy rains and storms late last year.

The Danang People’s Committee announced on January 26 an emergency over subsidence and landslide risks in a number of communes affected by prolonged downpours and typhoons Fengshen and Kalmaegi at the end of 2025.

In Loong Poc Hamlet of Nam Tra My Commune, a major crack about 50 centimetres wide and more than 250 metres long has cut across a concrete road and formed a large landslide arc, posing an imminent risk of collapse.

A survey conducted in late December identified 48 households in a high-risk zone, with evacuation plans and emergency supplies put in place.

Two villages in Tra Van Commune, Mang Lin and Tak Buon, were also placed under emergency status. Mang Lin has seen sinkholes and large hillside cracks affecting 32 households, while Tak Buon recorded 300-metre-long cracks with groundwater surfacing, threatening 41 households.

A Dieu hamlet and nearby areas in Dong Giang Commune have developed cracks stretching 200-500 metres on steep hillsides, affecting 109 households. Danger zones have been fenced off and emergency measures implemented.

Large cracks in Ong Sup and Ong Hung villages in Tra Leng Commune are threatening 40 households. In Pa Rum Hamlet of Nam Giang Commune, a crack more than 50 metres long and 3-5 metres deep is endangering 16 households.

The Danang People’s Committee has urged close monitoring of landslide risks, readiness to relocate residents and measures to stabilise livelihoods to minimise losses of life and property.

Severe flooding in late 2025 caused extensive damage in mountainous areas including Hung Son, Nam Tra My, Dong Giang, Tra Doc and A Vuong, which were formerly part of Quang Nam Province and are now under Danang’s administration.
