The trial, starting on January 7, aims to make better use of existing port infrastructure while a dedicated passenger terminal has yet to be developed. The ministry also said container cargo services should remain a priority at ports in the Cai Mep-Thi Vai area.

The Maritime and Inland Waterways Authority has been tasked with guiding the port operator, Phuoc An Port Petroleum Investment and Operation JSC, on implementation procedures. Passenger ships will only be permitted to dock if safety conditions for passengers and maritime operations are fully met.

Previously, the operator proposed expanding the port’s functions to allow vessels of up to 80,000 DWT to enter and leave berths 5, 6 and 7.

The company also suggested adding capacity to receive international and domestic cruise ships at Phuoc An Port to tap the potential of cruise tourism.
