HCM City traffic police handle over 200,000 drink-driving cases in 2025

Traffic police in Ho Chi Minh City handled more than 200,000 drink-driving cases in 2025, part of a broader crackdown that saw nearly one million traffic violations penalised.

According to the city’s traffic police department, PC08, officers detected over 980,000 administrative violations last year, impounding 11,385 cars, 239,760 motorbikes and 6,057 three- and four-wheeled vehicles. Police revoked 58,111 driving licences and deducted penalty points in 87,059 cases.

Among the violations, police recorded 201,958 drink-driving offences and 1,366 drug-related cases. Speeding accounted for 188,477 cases, about half detected on the spot and the rest captured by technical equipment, surveillance cameras and public reports.

Police also cited uninspected or illegally modified vehicles, reckless riding and excessive noise, while online footage led to action in 35 cases and investigations into two illegal street-racing incidents.

In the run-up to the 2026 Lunar New Year, or Tet, PC08 said it will step up patrols and checks citywide, focusing on drink-driving, drug use and speeding, with no restricted zones and no exceptions.

Enforcement will be intensified at night and in the early morning, particularly around restaurants, entertainment venues, city gateways, industrial zones and ports.

Police will  target violations involving students, owners who hand vehicles to unqualified drivers, and unsafe commercial transport, while boosting road safety education in coordination with schools.

Speed enforcement will be tightened through patrols and cameras on major routes, with strict penalties for overloading, illegal modifications, passenger transport violations and unsafe three- and four-wheeled vehicles.
