Traffic accidents fall sharply in Vietnam on New Year’s Day

Eighteen people were killed and 41 injured in 49 traffic accidents nationwide on January 1, the first day of the New Year, according to the Traffic Police Department.

Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of accidents fell by 24 cases, or 32.9 per cent, while fatalities dropped by 56.1 per cent and injuries by 4.7 per cent, the department said.

Police nationwide inspected nearly 10,500 traffic violations on the day, temporarily impounding 53 cars and more than 2,400 motorbikes. They also revoked 344 driving licences and deducted penalty points in more than 1,700 cases.

Violations related to drink-driving and speeding each accounted for more than 2,000 cases, while 93 cases involved overloaded vehicles.

On National Highway 1, traffic police checked more than 7,500 vehicles, issuing nearly 1,300 violation notices, revoking or deducting licence points in 358 cases and impounding 257 vehicles.

Highway patrol units under the Traffic Police Department also recorded 110 violations, revoking one driving licence and deducting points in 39 cases.
