Hanoi AI cameras log nearly 400 traffic violations in three days

Hanoi’s AI-powered traffic camera system recorded 393 violations in its first three days of operation, mainly red-light offences, exceeding detections made by traditional patrols.

The Hanoi traffic control centre officially began operations on December 13, managing more than 1,800 AI cameras installed across the city. The system covers about 195 intersections and 25 major roads and bridges, and can detect up to 28 types of traffic safety violations.

Between December 13 and December 16, the city’s traffic police identified 393 violations through the AI system, including 125 cars and 268 motorbikes.

Failure to obey traffic lights accounted for the vast majority, with 352 cases, involving 87 cars and 265 motorbikes. Other offences included five cases of cars crossing road markings, one car driving against traffic on a one-way street, three cases of motorbikes carrying too many passengers, 21 cases of cars stopping where stopping is prohibited, and 11 cases of cars picking up or dropping off passengers in no-stopping or no-parking zones.

According to Hanoi traffic police, initial assessments show the AI camera system is operating stably and effectively, with a clear increase in detected violations compared with traditional patrol methods and the period before official deployment.

Images captured by the cameras are high resolution, clearly showing number plates, time and the nature of violations, supporting accurate verification and penalties issued by post. Data are transmitted to a central server and stored for up to 75 days.
