Under the revised master plan submitted to the Ministry of Construction, the CAAV recommends that by 2030 Vietnam have 33 airports handling about 297 million passengers a year; by 2050 the number would rise to 36 airports.
To accommodate the expanded system, the total land area for airports is expected to grow to more than 26,600 hectares by 2030 and around 27,800 hectares by 2050.
The plan calls for roughly VND 500 trillion (USD19.23 billion) in investment from state budget, private capital and other legal sources through 2030.
As part of the expansion, the CAAV proposes adding two new airports, Mang Den Airport in Quang Ngai and Van Phong Airport in Khanh Hoa, into the national airport network. The aim is to support regional development, tourism, logistics and regional connectivity, including national security in the South‑Central and Central Highlands regions.
According to the proposal, Mang Den Airport is planned to be of level 4C, covering about 350 ha with an estimated investment of VND 5 trillion; Van Phong Airport would be level 4E, nearly 500 ha, with investment above VND 9.20 trillion.
The plan also includes upgrading Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E, reflecting its strategic importance on the East‑West economic corridor linking Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
