Floods continue across central and Central Highlands provinces

Heavy rain has caused widespread flooding and landslides across parts of central and Central Highlands of Vietnam.

Torrential downpours inundated several areas in Khanh Hoa, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri and Dak Lak provinces, leading to localised flooding and landslides.

Many areas in Thua Thien-Hue Province suffer severe flooding on November 17.

On the morning of November 17, Dak Lak police reported that sections of National Highway 29 through Son Giang Commune were submerged, blocking traffic. Traffic police set up checkpoints at both ends and directed vehicles to alternative routes.

Surrounding communes including Giang Mao, Cu Pui and Krong Bon also experienced flooding. Some schools suspended classes to ensure safety, while local authorities prepared plans to relocate households in deeply flooded areas.

Quang Tri recorded rainfall of 40 to 110 millimetres in the past 24 hours. Ba Long Commune evacuated 210 households with 785 residents to safe locations.

In Khanh Hoa, prolonged rain from early November 17 caused water to surge from upstream, flooding multiple areas.

Pham Trong Hung, chair of Thuan Bac Commune, said around 6,000 workers at Du Long Industrial Park were told to stay home for safety due to flooding. The industrial park’s management temporarily cut power across the area, while National Highway 1 in front of the park was submerged.

Several north-south trains have been suspended since the night of November 16 after floodwaters rose to around 0.25 metres in Nam Cam Ranh Commune, Khanh Hoa.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, from November 17 to 18, areas from Quang Tri to Danang and eastern parts of Quang Ngai and Gia Lai are forecast to receive 200 to 400 millimetres of rain, with some locations exceeding 700 millimetres.

Ha Tinh, eastern Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa are expected to see 100 to 300 millimetres, with isolated areas above 400 millimetres, while western parts of Quang Ngai to Dak Lak may receive 60 to 120 millimetres, with some points above 200 millimetres.
