Crowds visit re-emerged wooden shipwreck on Hoi An beach

Hundreds of local and foreign visitors are flocking to a wooden shipwreck that has briefly resurfaced on a Hoi An beach.

The vessel, buried again under sand on November 11 with only wooden frames protruding 20 to 30 centimetres above the surface, reappeared after months underground, drawing strong public interest.

Nguyen Ngoc Lac, 60, a local resident, said the ship became visible on November 8 on Tan Thanh Beach in Danang’s Hoi An Tay Ward before being covered by sand the next day. By November 11, only parts of its hull remained exposed.

At the site, Lac turned into an impromptu tour guide, using limited English and gestures to explain the ship’s story to foreign tourists.

Tran Thi Thu, 60, said she was excited to finally see the wreck and took photos to share with friends. Visitors from Danang, Hue, Quang Ngai and abroad have also rushed to view it.

A tourist from Denmark said he hoped the vessel would be excavated and displayed in a museum for research into its age, construction and former cargo.

Pham Phu Ngoc, deputy director of the Hoi An Centre for Cultural Heritage Conservation, said he had advised Danang authorities to urgently excavate the ship and move it to the Hoi An Museum for preservation, research and tourism.
