Strong cold spell forecast to hit northern region

A strong cold spell is forecast to affect northern Vietnam in the coming days, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures.

According to Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, northern provinces have experienced several days of rain and high humidity, creating uncomfortable damp conditions. The pattern is expected to ease by the end of November 11.

From November 12, the region will see the end of humid conditions, with clearer skies, drier air, and daytime sunshine, marking a brief transition before the cold front arrives.

A strong cold surge is expected between November 16 and 17, with minimum temperatures in lowland areas dipping below 17 degrees Celsius and under 16 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas. Daytime highs may fall to around 22 degrees Celsius.

During the 2025-2026 winter, average temperatures in northern provinces are expected to remain close to long-term norms. However, severe cold snaps may develop from late December 2025 and become more frequent in January and February 2026.

Stronger cold waves could affect both northern mountainous provinces and the northern delta, as well as north-central areas such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh. Mountainous areas including Yen Bai and Lang Son may experience frost, ice, or even snowfall if low temperatures coincide with high humidity.

Experts have urged residents to monitor forecasts and stay warm, particularly the elderly and children, while advising farmers to protect crops and livestock ahead of the cold spells.
