Lang Chut Village in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has been blanketed by over 100,000 cubic metres of coarse sand following flash floods in early October caused by the circulation of Storm Matmo.
The massive flood swept sand and gravel through the area, submerging 30 houses and damaging public infrastructure, roads, and farmland in Lang Chut Village, Van Ban Commune.
After the water receded, local authorities estimated that more than 100,000 cubic metres of sand had accumulated across the village.
Vu Xuan Thuy, chairman of the Van Ban Commune People’s Committee, said the local government would draw up a management plan and auction the sand, with all proceeds transferred to the state budget.
Communal police and residents have joined efforts to clean up houses and restore normal life. They also built a temporary one-kilometre-long dike using over 4,000 cubic metres of sand from the area to prevent further flooding.
