Hanoi authorities have begun installing 1,873 high-definition AI-powered cameras at major intersections across the city to enhance traffic management and public security.

The new system, integrated with artificial intelligence, was launched at the Pham Hung-Khuat Duy Tien junction on October 23. It features 360-degree rotation, long-range recognition of up to 500-700 metres, and the ability to operate under harsh weather conditions.

The network is expected to become fully operational in December.

Before installation, technicians checked transmission lines and adjusted camera angles to suit each junction and roadway.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Dao Viet Long, deputy head of the Hanoi Traffic Police Department, unlike conventional surveillance systems, the AI cameras can process images directly on the device, enabling faster and more accurate detection of traffic and security violations.

“Once operational, the system will greatly assist officers in traffic monitoring and enforcement,” Long said, noting that “AI cameras can automatically measure vehicle flow, adjust traffic light cycles in real time to ease congestion, and transmit violation data instantly to the command centre.”

The AI network can also recognise number plates, help trace vehicles linked to security or traffic incidents, and support efforts to build an innovative, safe and modern urban transport system.

Traffic police teams also carried out maintenance on traffic lights on Thursday morning. Captain Nguyen Sy Dai of the city’s traffic signal control unit said the new 8-megapixel cameras capture clear, detailed images even when zoomed or slowed down.

With this resolution, faces, number plates, and fast-moving objects can be recorded precisely, helping officers detect and handle violations more effectively, he said.

Under a master plan approved by the Hanoi People’s Committee, the city plans to install over 40,000 cameras by 2030, including 16,000 units for traffic, environmental and urban management.
