Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal for a nine-day Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday in 2026, running from February 14 to February 22, equivalent to the 27th day of the 12th lunar month of 2025 to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month of 2026.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Tet break will last nine days, as the holiday coincides with weekends. The extended break is expected to give citizens more flexibility for travel, shopping and family gatherings, while helping ease year-end traffic congestion.

Vietnam currently has 11 official public holidays per year, fewer than the average among Southeast Asian countries. The holidays include one day for New Year’s Day, five days for Lunar New Year, one day for the Hung Kings’ Commemoration, two days for Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labour Day (May 1), and two days for National Day.

Since 2021, National Day has been extended to two days, with the government designating either September 1 or September 3 as an additional day off each year.

Foreign nationals working in Vietnam are entitled to take an extra day off for their own country’s traditional New Year and National Day holidays.
