Prolonged heavy rain brought by Storm Matmo has flooded dozens of streets across Hanoi since early October 7, disrupting traffic and forcing schools to move classes online.

Quan Nhan Street is submerged by half a metre following heavy downpours at 6 am on October 7.

Continuous downpours triggered by Storm Matmo’s circulation inundated many parts of Hanoi from the early hours of October 7.

Some sections on Duong Dinh Nghe Street are submerged by one metre.

According to Hanoi Drainage Company, as of 6. 30 am, around 30 locations in the city centre were reported under water. Rainfall from midnight to 6.30 am ranged between 90 and 150 millimetres, with the heaviest recorded at O Cho Dua (223.9mm), Hai Boi (204.9mm), Dai Mo (170.5mm), and Phu Luong (163mm).

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that around 100 roads, streets, and residential areas were at risk of flooding on Tuesday morning, including Tran Vu, Cao Ba Quat, Lieu Giai, Doi Can, Ngoc Khanh, Dao Tan, Phung Hung, Bat Dan, and Duong Thanh.

The centre predicted continued moderate to heavy rain over the next three to six hours in Hanoi and neighbouring areas, with accumulated rainfall of 20–70 millimetres and some areas exceeding 100 millimetres.

 Schools shift to online learning amid flooding

Due to the severe weather, many schools in Hanoi allowed students to stay home and switch to online classes.

At 5.30 am, Hoang Thi Ha, a parent living in Tay Mo Ward, received a message from the principal of M.V. Lomonoxop School announcing that all students would continue online learning because nearby streets were flooded.

Luong Thi Van Trang, a resident of Hoang Mai District, said both Kim Giang Primary and Secondary Schools, where her two children study, also told students to stay home.

Olympia School sent a notice to parents at 5.30 am, requiring all grades from 1 to 12 to study online according to schedule, while kindergarten classes were suspended.

A Dantri/Dtinews survey found that schools in Cau Giay, Yen Hoa, Ha Dong, Thanh Tri, and Giang Vo wards had all informed parents of closures before 6 am.
